Happy Tuesday, awesome Moxie-Dude readers!
Yesterday during my routine Internet haunt I noticed a lot of mentions about Miley Cirus and the Video Music Awards (VMA) – most of them critical in a condescending way.
Some of the Tweets that got my attention went something like this:
“Now there’s something every father wants to see from his daughter.”
And
“Thanks for setting women back 20 years.”
Naturally, this lead me to do a little research in the name of I watched a few videos of her performance during the awards show.
The hamster’s Question
“WTF???”
The hamster couldn’t understand Miley’s crass enactment and even wondered if she was suffering from laryngitis. But when I stopped letting my eyes use up all my sensory powers and listened, the hamster soon realized that she was indeed using her voice. And a nice singing voice she does have. (Both the hamster and I agree on this point.)
My Question
“WTFN???”
Above all else, Miley Cirus is an entertainer.
Let’s compare Miley to Lucille Ball for a second, shall we?
If you’re old enough to remember Lucy, you remember her as what?
Funny.
Outspoken.
Even ridiculous.
She was also very beautiful and since beautiful people are on every street corner, Lucy stood out because she was her own person with her own style. She broke out of the cardboard box that society tries to fit everyone into and did her own thing. Lucy’s “shtick” was to get in trouble and then get into more trouble as she tried to fix her dilemma while hiding it all from her husband, Ricky. And she did this WITHOUT setting women back 20 years.
Back to the present
Miley Cirus is also not relying on her beauty as she breaks out of her cardboard box. Can you imagine having to entertain a room full of other performers?
Also, this girl didn’t come up with her piece on her own. She has an entourage of advisers, choreographers, etc. And although I can’t say for sure, I’m pretty sure that Miley’s father saw the rehearsals.
Note from the hamster: Yes, but would you want one of YOUR daughters acting like that?
To which I say, Oh pellleeeeaze!
Acting like what? She was PERFORMING. And good on her for sticking her tongue out and contorting her face. Miley is pretty AND human AND discovering AND growing.
Note to the hamster: Well at least I know now that you don’t only judge me.
{Melinda} I have a teenage daughter who was once a huge Hannah Montana fan. I have not had the stomach to watch the VMA performance — seeing a few of the stills and reading some descriptions was about all I could take. I think Miley has talent, more than that, she has tremendous value as a child of God. And I was really sad that she chose to cheapen herself with this “performance.” She is worth more than that. It made me feel sorry for her — that she was willing to sacrifice her dignity for something as elusive, fleeting and fickle as fame. That’s one mom’s opinion.
Thanks for your opinion, Melinda. Much appreciated.
While the hamster agrees with you, there’s a huge part of me that acknowledges self-discovery and experimenting with the different aspects of our selves as part of the process of becoming our best.
I think it’s safe to say that we’ve all done things that when we look back on, make us cringe. These are actually opportunities to really learn about our boundaries and true selves.
