Freelance writing –vs– Full-time job: A pros and cons perspective

ProsAndCons

Happy Day to you, awesome readers!

So I’ve been offered a full-time writing position and I’m seriously considering it. Yes, it would be quite the change from my current bohemian lifestyle but I think it’s time for a change. While some people avoid change at all cost, I actually love change.

Change is new.

Change is fresh.

Change is an opportunity to see outside of your comfort zone and possibly even grow a little.

Change can also be a little scary. Or at least that’s what they tell me.

Confession: I’ve always been the type to just do things; jump in with both feet. It’s part of my gypsy nature. But this time I’ve decided to try something different. I think they call it “thinking about it”.

So I’ve created a pros and cons list. I have to tell you though that I look at pros and cons a little differently than most people. And by differently, I mean that I use my own quasi-math by adding another element to the equation called “perspective”.

Translation: If I can change a con into a pro and a pro into a con by looking at it from a different perspective, it moves over to the other side.

So without further ado, I give you …

The pros and cons of giving up a freelance life and going to work full time

PROS

  • I’ll get to feel like part of a team again. (Hmmmm. No con here.)
  • I’ll get a regular paycheque. (Definitely no con here.)
  • CONS

  • I won’t be here when my kids get home from school. (My kids are now teenagers and barely notice me anymore anyway. Except for when we run out of cereal. THEN they notice me. Ah regular paycheque means no more running out of cereal! PRO.)
  • TRAFFIC. (I’ll get to sit and listen to music for an entire 40 minutes without any interruption from the callings of laundry and yard work. PRO.)
  • I won’t be able to just jump in my car and go work from a coffee shop when things get stale at my desk. (Okay. This is definitely a CON.)
  • I’ll have to work with a *GASP* schedule. (But schedules can be good, right? I mean, possibly schedules translate into not having to feel guilty when you’re at the gym at 10 a.m. instead of at your desk. Also, schedules can be an exercise in discipline … or something. Okay this qualifies as a PRO. But only barely so we’ll give it half a point.)
  • RESULTS

    Pro wins 4.5 to 1.5

Looks like the list says I should take the job. Stay tuned …

Congrats, Mona! Change is good… and in this case, you can always go back to working for your old boss if you hate it.. I mean, she seems pretty nice, and very understanding. 😉

Thanks, Jessica! And yes, you’re right my “old” boss is pretty cool. Although sometimes she wakes me at 2 a.m. to work on stuff. PS. Somehow I doubt that will change either way 🙂

    The Superwoman Workbook

“Mona’s ability to mix humor with insight is truly admirable.”
    Holly Monteith, Cynren Press

"Mona Andrei has a way of using humour to teach life lessons, hard taught through experience. Superwoman, The Sh*t They Don't Tell You Edition is both an easy and a hard read as she delves into the ever-changing world of the single mom. From online dating to the joys of grocery store wine, her personal experiences are complemented in this edition by the addition of other real-world stories. This "from the trenches" approach will have great appeal to those trying to get it all done without doing themselves in."
Kathy Buckworth, author of I Am So the Boss of You

"Superwoman is a love letter to single mothers everywhere. Mona Andrei writes with the tenderness of someone who’s lived it and the clarity of someone who’s learned from it. Her humor, honesty, and hard-won wisdom make this book a companion, a mirror, and a reminder that every woman deserves to honor her own strength.

"Reading Superwoman feels like sitting down with your smartest, funniest friend who refuses to let you forget your own power. Both medicine and celebration, this is a must-read for any woman who’s lived whole chapters of life on sheer heart and determination. This book doesn’t just tell a great story — it elevates the spirit of every woman who’s ever carried the world and wondered if she was enough.”
