The Power of Humour Writing: A Side Hustle for Single Mothers

December 10, 2023 by Mona Andrei Leave a Comment

Hey there, awesome readers!

There’s no denying it. When you’re a single mother, life is a challenge. Between juggling work, parenting, household chores, and shopping, who can fit in personal time. That’s not a real question. We all know the answer to this math equation:

Single mom = too tired for personal time.

And yet, despite everything we do, personal time is a NECESSITY… It’s part of a balanced life. A sanity savior.

Here’s another truth bomb. Many single mothers run out of money before they run out of month. That’s because kids are expensive. And have you noticed the price of food these days? It’s crazy. How are we supposed to survive with only one salary?

And I’m not making this up. While I was writing SUPERWOMAN: A Funny and Reflective Look at Single Motherhood, I got to interview single mothers across the globe and many of them were raising their kids alone, without any support from their baby daddy.

(For the record, I hate that term – baby daddy – but in a bizarre way, it totally fits in with the context of what I’m trying to say here.)

So, here’s the BIG question:

How can we combine our need for personal time with our need for more money, killing two stones with one bird?

(No, that wasn’t a mistake. This is an animal-friendly blog.)

And here’s the even BIGGER answer:

Take something you love to do and turn it into a side hustle!

That’s exactly what I did with humour writing.

In the pursuit of financial stability and work-life balance, a creative side hustle can solve all many of your problems. Following are only a few benefits of writing humour.

The Therapeutic Effects of Humour

As we know only too well, life can be is challenging and overwhelming. And seeing the humour in our circumstances can provide a powerful coping mechanism. Writing with a funny bone allows single mothers to navigate tough situations with a lighter perspective, turning everyday struggles into comedic anecdotes. This therapeutic effect not only helps in personal healing, but also resonates with a broad audience, creating a sense of camaraderie among readers. (Yes, “a broad audience.” Do you know how many single mothers there are out there? At the time of this writing, A LOT!)

Flexibility: Tailoring Work to Your Schedule

One of the greatest advantages of humour writing as a side hustle is its flexibility. Single mothers can choose when and where to work, allowing you to balance your many responsibilities with efficiency. Whether it’s during naptime, after bedtime, or on weekends, humour writing fits seamlessly into the chaotic schedule of single parenting.

Bonus tip: Always carry a notebook and pen with you. Spontaneous ideas are GOLD.

A Creative Outlet for Self-Expression

Single mothers often find themselves yearning for a creative outlet amidst the routine of daily life. Humour writing provides an excellent platform for self-expression. It allows you to share your unique experiences, perspectives, and insights in an entertaining way. Through humour, you can connect with other single mothers who appreciate what you’re going through. (Because they’re going through the same thing!)

Building a Supportive Community

The online world is brimming with readers seeking relatable content. By sharing humorous stories and insights, you can build a supportive community around your writing. This not only creates a sense of belonging, but also opens up opportunities for networking and collaboration with like-minded individuals. (I can’t tell you how many paid writing opportunities I’ve had over the years, simply because someone stumbled on this lil’ ole blog of mine.)

Diversifying Income Streams

In the quest for financial stability, diversifying income streams is key. Humour writing can be a lucrative side hustle, especially with the rise of online platforms and social media. From blog posts and articles to social media content and e-books, the possibilities are endless. As your audience grows, so does the potential for partnerships, sponsorships, and monetization. (CHA-CHING!)

Overcoming Challenges with Humour

Life as a single mother is filled with unique challenges, but humour can be a powerful tool for overcoming adversity. Writing about these challenges with a comedic twist helps you process your experiences while resonating with readers facing similar situations. This shared laughter can turn difficulties into triumphs and foster a positive mindset. (And what are we if we don’t have a positive mindset? Miserable. That’s what we are, just miserable.)

Finding Inspiration Through Humour

Remember what I said earlier about how single mothers are too tired for personal time? Well, here’s the thing: when it comes to doing something you enjoy – like seeing the humour in life’s little quirks and writing about them – this actually gives you more energy because it’s more fun than say, matching socks and folding towels.

Getting Started: Tips for Aspiring Humour Writers

1. Start a Blog: Create a blog to showcase your humour writing. Platforms like WordPress and Medium are user-friendly and inexpensive. AND writing regularly is the BEST way to improve your writing skills. True story.

2. Social Media Presence: Take advantage of social media by sharing bite-sized pieces of your humour writing. Engage with your audience and build a community around your unique voice.

3. Attend Writing Workshops: Join writing workshops or online courses to hone your craft and connect with fellow humour writers.

4. Explore Freelance Opportunities: Pitch your humour writing to websites, magazines, and online publications. Platforms are ALWAYS looking for fresh and entertaining content.

5. Be Authentic: Your experiences and perspective are your greatest assets. Be authentic in your writing, and readers will appreciate your genuine voice.

Humour writing offers single mothers a fulfilling and flexible side hustle that combines creativity with the potential for financial rewards. By embracing the therapeutic power of humour, building a supportive community, and sharing your unique stories and insights, single mothers can embark on a journey of self-expression, resilience, and empowerment.

So, why not turn life’s challenges into comedic tales and discover the joy of humour writing as a side hustle?

I started this blog back in 2010, and I can’t tell you how many doors it has opened for me. Can’t or won’t? Can’t, because I haven’t kept count. But MANY.

PS. No birds were injured during the writing of this blog post.

“Mona’s ability to mix humor with insight is truly admirable.”
Holly Monteith, Cynren Press

"Mona Andrei has a way of using humour to teach life lessons, hard taught through experience. Superwoman, The Sh*t They Don't Tell You Edition is both an easy and a hard read as she delves into the ever-changing world of the single mom. From online dating to the joys of grocery store wine, her personal experiences are complemented in this edition by the addition of other real-world stories. This "from the trenches" approach will have great appeal to those trying to get it all done without doing themselves in."
Kathy Buckworth, author of I Am So the Boss of You

"Superwoman is a love letter to single mothers everywhere. Mona Andrei writes with the tenderness of someone who’s lived it and the clarity of someone who’s learned from it. Her humor, honesty, and hard-won wisdom make this book a companion, a mirror, and a reminder that every woman deserves to honor her own strength.

"Reading Superwoman feels like sitting down with your smartest, funniest friend who refuses to let you forget your own power. Both medicine and celebration, this is a must-read for any woman who’s lived whole chapters of life on sheer heart and determination. This book doesn’t just tell a great story — it elevates the spirit of every woman who’s ever carried the world and wondered if she was enough.”
